Dr. Ferdinand "Ferry" Porsche designed the 356 to be a practical, stylish compact car for everyday use, but one with quick acceleration, unrivalled braking, and excellent road holding. The first true Porsche legend, the 356 featured a tubular spaceframe chassis, aluminum body and a rear-mounted 4-cylinder, 1131cc Volkswagen engine. Introduced in 1953, the 550 Spyder was Porsche's first car designed specifically for racing. It was based heavily on the 356 and featured a simple, lightweight body and ladder frame chassis. Because of its outstanding achievements in major races against models with far more horsepower, the 550 Spyder was dubbed the "shark in the pool of perch." The 550A was introduced in 1956 and had a lighter spaceframe chassis and modified rear suspension. The 718 RSK evolved from the 550A and was also designed for racing. (The K referred the layout of the torsion bar and suspension ball-joints.) The innovative front suspension allows a lower, more slippery body. |
